FORT JAY, built onto NY’s first fort of 1624 in which the ethics of
Toleration and Freedom of Conscience were received. Re-designed as a
military base in 1907. The universal credo of Tolerance is embedded in
and embodied by Governors Island ever since NY State’s first
jurisprudence originated on the Island with the arrival of NY’s first
settlers in 1624–a first in the New World and the unique underpinning of
NY’s and the nation’s ethos of diversity and pluralism.
